Jose and Laura from Descubre Sin Limites shared with us another one of their breathtaking expeditions, this time to Morocco!
“The sun has just gone, and we have witnessed one of the most wonderful sunsets …
there, sitting in one of the highest dunes of the Erg Chebbi … Wonderful …
We return to the van … we run down the dune! We go up, we go down, we go back up …
The light is disappearing little by little, in the same way that air begins to rise, getting
stronger, to the point that we are immersed in a strong sandstorm …
We cover as we can, the fine sand sneaks on all sides, it sticks into the skin as if it were
needles … We arrived. We changed the van from site, we must go to a place a little more
sheltered, we were under a dune.
The van moves, the wind is strong.
We are going to dine in the hotel dining room, it is my birthday and our new friends have
prepared a potato “cake” for me. Delights like chorizo, mussels, chips … will decorate our
table. Thanks for the gesture.
We are going to sleep, tomorrow will be a great day. It was.
A splendid day dawns, sunny as always in this part of the planet. No trace of the
sandstorm that hit us at night. We have an incredible day of tracks ahead.
Thanks to a good friend we have some wonderful traks, unknown to us and most of the
people who go to Morocco. We set course towards adventure!
We move away from Merzouga … We continue by road to a point where we have to
deviate, the track begins! The landscape is amazing! We are lovers of Morocco and its
landscapes. We go into landscapes that have served as scenes in movies, and that is not
for less.
The track shows us that we continue straight ahead towards that huge rock formation
that can be seen on the horizon. We are approaching, “what a wonder!”
We continue, a huge door gives way to this wonderful place. We enter. We stop our vans.
There are those who would climb up, but we will walk up. It seems that we are in a movie.
We went up a narrow cobblestone path … and we arrived … We arrived at one of the most
wonderful viewpoints we have ever seen. Amazing. Under our feet is a huge expanse of
desert … We are at the top. “Can there be a more incredible place?”
We travel all the way up, up, down … We enjoy every moment … Numerous fossils
embedded in the stone show us that the passage of time is real.
We do not want to leave this place, we could spend hours and hours here, but we must
return. We return to the van to return back to camp. We’ll be back, I’m sure we’ll be
back …
We return after our steps and those of the track. We cross the dusty tracks of this part of
Morocco, of this incredible corner of the world … And we go to the second location of the
day.
“We will arrive?”. We know in advance that it is difficult, that we may get caught in the
sand … That’s how it went …
After some time another we drove through the middle of nowhere, with incredible tracks
that made us hallucinate even more with the landscape of this country. It’s just us … “What a wonder!
Little by little we are approaching the first of the points where we want to arrive. It seems
that everything is going well, but the sand rivers are waiting for us.
We arrived at the first of them, we managed to pass it, but not without giving a jump that put to the test the resistance of our bike rack, we fell as such, and we bounced on this step. Next, we also crossed it … We continued … but a little further on, another river of sand, and the first one let us in, but when we went to leave we were trapped …
We have to pull plates and shovels. We dig, we put plates, we advance a little. Return to
the same. A little more progress, but little. Plates, shovel … Plates, shovel … We evaluate
the terrain ahead. It’s better. But possibly a little later we will get caught again.
Time passes and we have not yet been able to leave …
In the background we see the staircase, there is the first point we want to reach, it is right
there, but we haven’t moved …
Our fellow travelers decide not to move forward. It is the best decision. We will try to go
backwards … “1,2,3! Pull! “And the van left without any effort. For a few moments it goes
through our heads to try again … But no, we go backwards.
In the distance, a storm is advancing by leaps and bounds towards us. Incredible black
clouds wrapped in rays approach to where we are. We want to go to the stairs, “Will it
give us time?”
We pick up plates, we tie the shovel … the wind is getting stronger every time. We eat
something before going out. We were exhausted from getting the van moving and needed to rest. We close the door of the van, the dust gets to us from all sides …
After these moments of rest we went in search of our objective. It’s there, in the
background … The storm is coming. The first drops of water escape. We continue, it is
getting closer.
Incredible, the ladder is before us. It looks like a Martian’s work. In the middle of nowhere, this enormous construction rises. And although it seems incredible, there is a person guarding the place. He let us see it, but not climb it.
Simply incredible.
The storm is on top of us. We must go back to the vans. The rays are getting closer and
closer to us, the air is stronger and it starts to rain. We did not take long.
We must return where we came from, we will follow the track. The rain will be with us for a
good part of the journey. The “shingles” that make up the rays are seen shining between
the gray and dark clouds. What a wonderful place. But we must get out on the road soon,
if it rains much more the track can become a mud trap. We continue driving, without
stopping.
After some time or another, we see the end of the road, the road is at the bottom … We
have achieved it. What a great day!
It is relatively noon. We can look for a nearby campsite or continue to our next
destination, the Gorges of Todra and Dades. We continue on our way, we know that it will
be night soon … but we prefer to sleep near the Gorges … Morocco is wonderful.”
